Junior Intercounties

Sunday, September 1st, 2013

A fantastic day with DWAA leading from start to finish.

With the smallest squad of all four Counties, everyone in the team shot out of their skin and encouraged by Captain Burden, lifted their game on the day.

We had two new County Records from Harry Harding and Erin Prior and Jade Cullingford breaking her own Longbow County record. In addition, Ryan Kendrick and Ben Eve both broke the 9 year old U14 and U16 Short Windsor County records. Special mention must go to William Stazicker who put in a superb Barebow performance with the challenge of shooting from a chair on the line and our thoughts go with him as he faces a new operation in the next weeks and to his father Ian who is recovering in hospital. Thanks to Joe Fay for standing in with his recurve to act as our third Compound archer.

The day was a great success with a superb Olympic style head to head knockout to round it all off. Ben Eve, encouraged by a noisy DWAA partisan crowd won the recurve head to head and was appropriately carried about the field by his team with plenty of Lightning Bolts and Mobots to boot.

The day proved to be a fight between GAS and DWAA for the first place honours. After 3 dozen 2252 played 2236 a slender lead of 16 to DWAA. At 6 dozen the scores where 4834 against 4804, we opened up to 30 but still extremely close, every arrow must count and the team knew that and raised their game. The final score was DWAA 7783, GAS 7684, SCAS 6933 and DCAS 6441, victory to DWAA with the final margin over GAS extended to 99 at the close.

Praise must go to all the Juniors of all teams as this was one of the closest Intercounties yet but importantly, it was DWAA who were Champions and winners of the Margaret Lewis trophy. The look on the faces of GAS said everything, they had a strong team and to be honest were probably the fancied winners but that was before everyone in DWAA raised their game.
